I can hardly believe this marathon of crafts is almost over. It’s been a fun ride but I look forward to a more sane pace of crafting 🙂
Today’s project was inspired by paper straws. While I’ll walk you through just two ideas, the options are boundless when it comes to how you can fashion paper straws into ornaments. To that point, Krafty Kath has her own twist on this project today so be sure to check out what she’s cooked up.
This project is a great candidate for a kids project as it can mostly be done with scissors, straws and yarns.
DIY paper straw ornament #1 – Star
It takes just 5 minutes per ornament! If your tree is a bit sparse, this is an easy and affordable way to round it out.
Materials
- Paper straws
- Yarn
- Snowflake whole punch
- White paper
- Brads
- Hole punch
- X-acto knife
- Scissors
Step 1
Cut 2 straws in half to make a total of 4 pieces.
Step 2
Punch holes in the center of each piece.
Step 3
Punch a whole in the middle of your snowflake.
Step 4
Insert the snowflake into the brad. Follow with all four straw pieces. You may need to pinch the center of the straws so they can all fit. Close the brad and arrange the straw pieces into an 8-point star.
Step 5
Punch a hole at the top of one straw piece. Thread yarn through and tie a knot.
Oh snap! You just made a paper straw star ornament. Lickety split!
DIY paper straw ornament #2 – Geometric
These are just as quick to make as the star ornament, but a little bit harder to explain. Let’s see how I do.
Materials
- Paper straws
- Yarn
- Pom pom
- X-acto knife
- Scissors
- Large needle
Step 1
Cut 12 3″ straw pieces.
Step 2
Thread your needle with a long length of yarn. Thread four straw pieces (1, 2, 3 and 4) onto the yarn.
Step 3
Thread the yarn through straw piece 1 to make a closed square.
Step 4
Insert two more straw pieces (5, 6). Thread the yarn through straw piece 3. This will make half of the top pyramid.
Step 5
Continue to make the top and bottom pyramids (to make your diamond) by threading straw pieces for each edge.
As you go, make sure your yarn is taut. Tie a knot at the end. Leave enough yarn to tie on your pom pom and to create a loop.
Confession: Admittedly this is where my instruction fall apart a bit. It’s easier to do than explain, promise!
Step 6
Thread your pom pom onto the yarn. Tie a knot at the desired length and trim. With the other half of your yarn piece, tie a loop.
Whoop! You just made a geometric paper straw ornament. You’re on a roll!
