It always seems to be the little details that prove the most memorable. For day 4 of 25 days of crafts, we will add a fun and inexpensive twist to drinking glasses, turning them from ordinary to delightful. Using etching cream, we’ll create a spiral stripe reminiscent of a candy cane.
Serve festive holiday spritzers with these glasses and you’ll be sure to delight your guests!
Candy Cane Glasses
- Tall straight-sided glass
- Armour Etch cream
- Paint brush
- Blue painters tape
Begin by cleaning you glass with Windex to remove any fingerprints. Start at the top of the glass with a strip of painters tape (longer than the height of your glass) angled at approximately 45 degrees. Carefully wrap the tape from the top to the bottom of the glass.
Wrap the ends of the tape around the rim and bottom of the glass.
Smooth out the tape to make sure there aren’t any air bubbles or creases.
Repeat with another piece of tape, following the edge of the previous tape. The diameter of your glass will depend on how many strips of tape you will use.
Note: It might take a little trial and error to find the most accurate distance in between strips. Our glass took 4 strips of tape with approximately 1/4″ in between each strip.
Once you have all of your tape on your glass you can begin to apply the etching cream. Be careful not to get too much of the etching cream on your fingers. The bottle is specific about wearing gloves and protective glasses. Oops! We made sure to hold the glass on the tape, not letting it touch our skin too much.
Apply with a wooden stick or a paint brush. Make sure you get good coverage.
Cover all the areas to be etched and let it sit for one minute.
Rinse off the etching cream in the sink using warm water.
Once the etching cream is rinsed off you can remove the tape. Some of it might fall off while rinsing and that is ok.
Fill ‘er up, you just made a candy cane glass!
Wash the glass using dish washing soap to make sure you get all the chemicals off the glass before using and then enjoy!
- 1 cup cranberry juice
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- Lime wedge
Throw a few fresh raspberries in the bottom of your glass. Add lime juice and cranberry juice and stir. Add some ice and garnish with a lime wedge and you have a perfect cranberry mock-tail! Drink up!
