On our last day in Paris we stopped by Le Bon Marché to check out their holiday shop. They had baskets and trees brimming with ornaments including dragons, dinosaurs, and oddly enough, the American Southwest. My mother walked away with an awesome, fiery dragon while I left inspired by their ornament displays and the beginning of what became this post.
If you pref a modern aesthetic during the holidays or just have a treasured ornament that deserves its own display, this is the DIY for you. It’s quick, inexpensive, and sure to make a statement.
DIY Modern Holiday Ornament Display
Approximate time: 20 minutes
Materials and Supplies
- 12 inch metal macrame ring
- 8 inch metal macrame ring
- 2 inch metal macrame ring
- Craft wire
- Craft tape (I used washi tape in the same color as the yarn)
- Craft glue
- Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel (optional)
As an optional first step, you may want to spray your metal rings with a sealant (I used Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel). This will help the rings last longer by preventing rusting.
In this step you’ll cover the 2″ metal ring with yarn. Start by tying a knot and securing it in place with a small piece of tape. Wrap the ring with yarn until it’s fully covered. Tie a knot at the end, trim remaining yarn, and apply a dab of glue to hold the end in place.
In this step you’ll be securing the rings to each other with yarn. Create a small loop with the craft wire. Attach it, along with the 2″ ring to the top of the 8″ and 12″ rings. I started by holding them together with a piece of washi tape and then wrapping yarn around the two larger rings. I put about 1.5 inches on either side of the 2″ inch ring. Finish by tying a knot in the yarn, trimming, and securing the end with a dab of glue.
In this step you’ll create the fringe. Cut approximately 40 pieces of yarn of equal length. I cut mine at 24 inches each. Taking two at a time, attach to the bottom of the 12 inch ring using a tie hitch knot. Continue until all pieces are securely attached to the ring. Add more or less to your liking. Trim bottoms so all the fringe is the same length.
There you have it! You just made a modern holiday ornament display!
